REPERTOIRE & RESOURCE CHAIRS
Lynn Ryan is in her ninth year directing choirs and teaching guitar at Charles M. Russell High School in Great Falls, Montana. Mrs. Ryan earned her Bachelors degree in Choral Music Education from Pacific Lutheran University, where she studied conducting with Dr. Richard Sparks, Dr. Richard Nance, and Kathryn Lehmann. She earned her M.M. in Choral Conducting from Northern Arizona University (Flagstaff), studying with Dr. Edith Copley and Dr. Gary Weidenaar. She serves as the Youth Coordinator on the Northwest ACDA board, department leader at Charles M. Russell High School, and is an accompanist for her church.
DR. C. MICHAEL PORTER is the Director of Choral Activities at Boise State University and the Artistic Director of Critical Mass Vocal Artists. In addition to his service to NWACDA, Dr. Porter serves on the Editorial Board for the Choral Journal. He also contributes often to the Choral Journal’s Sound Review column and to the Choral Scholar’s Score Review area. Dr. Porter is most excited to create meaningful and engaging experiences for NWACDA's future educators-conductors. When Dr. Porter is not in front of a choir—or buried in a score—he enjoys spending time with his amazing wife, Amanda, and spirited daughter, Betty June.
Karen P. Thomas is a nationally known leader in the field of choral music and performance, as a conductor, composer, and arts advocate. She is the Artistic Director and Conductor of Seattle Pro Musica, and has conducted at international festivals in Europe and North America. An award-winning composer, she was named the Washington State “Outstanding Choral Director” for 2012. For her leadership in multiple areas, including making choral ensembles welcoming spaces for transgender and nonbinary singers, she received a 2018 Seattle Mayor’s Arts Award.
Jeff Horenstein is the choir director at Meadowdale High School in Lynnwood, Washington where his choirs and vocal jazz ensembles are often recognized for their excellence. Jeff is a founding member of the award-winning contemporary vocal group Groove For Thought, and hosts their annual Vocal Jazz Forum, an educational festival for high school ensembles. Jeff believes in the power of music to foster empathy and bring people together, and he is excited to continue his work on the Board to that end.
