Brent Wells appointed director of choirs at College of Idaho

wellsBrent Wells is the newly appointed Director of Choral Activities at the College of Idaho, where he directs the C of I Chamber Singers, and C of I Chorale.  Prior to his appointment, he worked in secondary education, directing choral programs at the middle school and high school levels in both private and public institutions.

As a bass vocalist, Dr. Wells has frequently performed as a featured soloist and has enjoyed membership in many acclaimed choral ensembles. He has sung professionally with the Redlands Choral Artists, and also performed the Berlioz Grande Messe des morts, Op. 5 with the Carnegie Hall Festival Chorus under the direction of Robert Spano.  In the upcoming winter season, he will sing with the Santa Fe Desert Chorale.

He received his DMA in choral conducting at Michigan State University, and his Master’s in choral conducting and BM in music education from Brigham Young University.  His two primary areas of scholarship focus on the English folk song, with particular emphasis on the works of Percy Grainger, and the use of IPA in choral settings.

His recent publications include a series of articles appearing in the April 2011, May 2011, and September 2011 issues of the Choral Journal, discussing the folk-based compositions and collecting methodology of Percy Grainger.  In addition, he also served as guest editor for the September 2011 issue of the Choral Journal—a focus issue dedicated to Grainger's choral works.  Wells also co-authored the recently published book: Translations and Annotations of Choral Repertoire, Volume II: German Texts—IPA Pronunciation Guide, published by earthsongs.

He, along with his wife and three children, are thrilled to be new residents of "The Gem State," and look forward to life in the Northwest!
