As I write this article, the
weather in Boise is HOT – we
are working on a record of 9 days in a row of over 100 degrees, and unfortunately,
we will probably make it. I am sipping a diet Coke and thinking
about the fact that school starts in about a month and holiday music
needs to be selected. I selected some of mine already, but then
a colleague mentions a piece, or as we have an ACDA National Convention
coming up, the music for the children’s chorus reading session
has started to come in and there are a couple
of really great pieces that I think I will want to use in one choir or
another, so the process continues. I thought, perhaps some of you
might be on the same page of the hymnal, so to speak, and decided to
give you a list of music, which is certainly not exhaustive, but should
acknowledge some old favorites and perhaps present some new possibilities
for your choir.
Each of us has different needs for music of the season and different
choirs – from auditioned community and school choirs to y’all
come school choirs, so our needs and levels of music vary. As I
put together this list of tried and true selections, I attempted t o address
some of those needs, but certainly not all. Most of the music is
2 part, although there are some unison and SSA selections. Some
of the 2 part pieces are easily adaptable to a younger, unison only,
group. I am always excited to find new and interesting repertoire
for my various choirs, so please feel to forward any titles you would
care to share and I will, with your permission, share them with others
in the Northwest region.
Below are some tried and true gems. When I look
at lists like this, if I find one or two new pieces I am always thrilled,
so have fun exploring these titles and sharing them with your young singers.

As mentioned above, we have an ACDA National Convention coming up March
7-10, 2007, in Miami. I hope many of you will consider sending
some of your singers to the TREBLE YOUTH HONOR CHOIR, which will be directed
by Jean Ashworth Bartle. It should prove to be a unique and once
in a lifetime opportunity – singing with others from all over the
United States and working with a director of this caliber. Audition
materials must be postmarked by Monday, October 2, 2006. All information
and audition forms are available in the June 2006 Choral Journal and
are available at www.acdaonline.com |
